Understanding Treatment Centers for Addiction

Treatment centers for addiction offer patients a number of programs designed to help them achieve and sustain lasting sobriety. These treatment centers can include:

Residential Centers

With residential rehab, individuals stay at the facility round-the-clock for an extended period of time. Generally, no less than 30 days and no more than a full year. These 24/7 residential arrangements help patients focus on their recovery by physically removing them from their everyday settings. Patients are typically offered a serene environment that supports reflection, healing, and recovery. They are surrounded by caring professionals who provide emotional support and promote healthy coping skills.

Outpatient Centers

There is outpatient care for those who cannot drop everything and move into a residential setting for an extended period. Outpatient programs include many of the same types of services offered by residential centers. One of these services is detox. Another service is counseling. Counseling may be in individual or group format. Mental health services may be offered as well.

While both types of treatment centers can treat all kinds of addiction, outpatient programs are ideal for those with a less severe substance use disorder or as continued care after completing residential treatment. These programs also cost less, so they may be more practical for those who can’t afford a residential treatment stay. In addition, if patients must remain at home due to work or family demands, outpatient services are the logical choice.

Types of Outpatient and Rehab Programs

The types of addiction treatment programs and services can vary from each center. Often the services offered in residential and outpatient treatment programs can include:

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapies help patients:

  • Identify and modify behaviors related to drug use
  • Develop problem-solving skills
  • Cope with stress and triggers in a healthy way
  • Improve communication skills
  • Learn how to manage relationships

Two of the most commonly used behavioral therapies include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

Medications-Assisted Treatment

Using medication to treat substance use disorders is often referred to as “medication-assisted treatment,” or MAT. Medication is often used in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies.

Medications can reduce the cravings and other symptoms associated with withdrawal from a substance by occupying receptors in the brain associated with using that drug, blocking the rewarding sensation that comes with using a substance, or inducing negative feelings when a substance is taken.

Support Groups

Support groups are another critical part of treatment. These gatherings offer recovering addicts a place to share their progress, struggles, and experiences with one another to stay motivated on the road to recovery.

At Michael’s House, we hold a range of addiction support group meetings for all types of substance use disorders. Our goal is to help each patient form a support network of individuals who understand the struggles associated with addiction and recovery.

Aftercare Plans

Aftercare plans play a pivotal role in addiction treatment programs, providing a roadmap to recovery long after an individual leaves the treatment center. These personalized plans help mitigate relapse risks, fostering sustainable sobriety by addressing unique needs, triggers, and challenges the individual might face. These plans often incorporate the following:

  • Ongoing counseling or therapy sessions
  • Continuous access to support groups
  • Mentorship or alumni programs

By promoting healthy lifestyle changes and coping mechanisms, aftercare plans are instrumental in supporting individuals in their journey towards a substance-free life.
