Aetna® was founded in 1850 and operated as a life insurer and liability insurance company for over a century. In 1996 Aetna sold its property and casualty business and merged with U.S. Healthcare to begin the transition to a health insurance company. By 2000 Aetna had sold its remaining non-health related businesses and became a company devoted exclusively to health insurance and associated services. In 2018, CVS acquired Aetna.
