Can Rohypnol Cause a Hangover?

Providing Trusted, Evidence-Based
Treatment for Three Decades and Counting

If you or a loved one is experiencing addiction, we’re here to help.

Rohypnol, often called “roofies” and known as the “date rape” drug, is a powerful sedative. As a powerful central nervous system depressant, it is illegal in the US, but it still finds its way into the hands of drug users.

Rohypnol (generic name: flunitrazepam) is colorless and odorless when added to beverages, which makes it easy for predators to pass it to other people without their knowledge. In some circles, Rohypnol is a popular club and party drug, and it produces amnesiac effects; people who abuse it often report confusion and “missing blocks of time,” along with an intense hangover the next day.

Rohypnol Side Effects

Rohypnol produces a variety of uncomfortable, even dangerous side effects. Because it sedates users so strongly, it greatly increases the risk of sexual assault.

The following side effects may also occur from Rohypnol use:

  • Fearlessness and inhibition
  • Impaired judgment
  • Impaired coordination
  • Confusion and disorientation

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Unconsciousness

Using Rohypnol as a party drug in large amounts is extremely dangerous. For starters, you can never be sure exactly what is in the pill or powder you’re consuming. At its worst, Rohypnol can lead to coma and accidental overdose. If you or a loved one abuses this drug, it is time to get help.

Rohypnol Hangover

At least six of the eight symptoms above are similar to what one might experience after a night of excessive drinking. Many users report that due to the strong sedating effects of Rohypnol, the after-effects are even worse than the hangover-like effects of other drugs and alcohol. Hangover symptoms are typically experienced within 24 hours of consumption, and they can last up to 48 hours.

An extreme hangover is one of the reasons people who have been assaulted may not realize it for several days, or why they cannot remember the events that led up to the assault.

Furthermore, many users believe that a Rohypnol hangover stems from the fact that they drank too much, even if they do not remember drinking more than usual. Unfortunately, because this drug also causes amnesiac effects, it may take even more time to piece together that an assault took place.
